Team news

Cameroon came through their defeat against Switzerland unscathed so Rigobert Song will have a full squad of players to choose from against Serbia. Although, given the lack of success they enjoyed in their first game, changes might be made to the starting XI.

Serbia went into their World Cup opener with question marks over the fitness of Aleksandar Mitrovic and Filip Kostic; the former started while the latter was an unused substitute. Kostic might come into the team for the clash with Cameroon while Dusan Vlahovic could join Mitrovic in attack.

Serbia (3-4-3): (Vanja) Milinkovic-Savic, Milenkovic, Veljkovic, Pavlovic; Zivkovic, Gudelj, Lukic Kostic; (Sergej) Milinkovic-Savic, (Aleksandar) Mitrovic, Tadic.

Last time out

Cameroon battled valiantly against Switzerland in their first game in a game that they weren’t expected to get anything from. A 1-0 scoreline and Yann Sommer winning player of the match highlighted the Africans’ efforts but they still came away empty-handed.

For much of their game against Brazil, Serbia kept the World Cup favourites relatively quiet before Richarlison took it upon himself to single-handedly win the game.

An instinctive poacher’s finish preceded the goal of the tournament so far to condemn the Serbians to an opening-game defeat. It certainly won’t be seen as a crisis, though as they wouldn’t have expected to get anything from the five-time winners.

What’s at stake?

Defeat for either team in this one could lead to an early elimination from the World Cup.

But, in the knowledge that Brazil are overwhelming favourites to beat Switzerland in the other game, victory for Cameroon or Serbia will put them right back in the hunt for the last 16 and could even see them move above Switzerland in second place.

It feels like a game that both teams will have to attack as a draw doesn’t particularly benefit either team, especially not Cameroon who still have Brazil to play.

Prediction

Serbia to beat Cameroon.

Cameroon to win: 60%. Serbia to win: 17%. Draw: 23%.
