Portugal defender Nuno Mendes, who left pitch in tears after sustaining injury during Portugal's win

Nuno Mendes is set to miss the rest of the World Cup following his injury in Portugal's win against Uruguay.

The Paris Saint-Germain left-back left the Lusail Stadium pitch in tears during the victory, but is now not expected to return to the action throughout the rest of the tournament.

Raphael Guerreiro came on in place of Mendes on 42 minutes as Portugal went on to secure qualification for the round of 16.

It will come as devastating news for the youngster, who also sustained a hamstring injury before the start of the tournament.

L'Equipe have now reported that following his thigh contracture, Mendes will not be available for the clash against South Korea on Friday.

There is a feeling that he won't be fit enough to play during the rest of the World Cup and the injury is similar to what he had before it commenced, with a decision set to be made 'in the next few hours'.

Mendes will surely be gutted with the news but at just 20 years old, he is highly likely to play at future tournaments for his country.

He played no part in Portugal's opening match in Qatar - a 3-2 win over Ghana - but was rewarded with a starting berth against Uruguay.

Portugal largely controlled proceedings in the first half, however, the best chance fell to Uruguay.

It came through a mazy run through the heart of midfield and defence from Rodrigo Bentancur only have Diogo Costa.

However, the Tottenham midfielder could only strike straight at the Portugal goalkeeper.

But in the end it was Bruno Fernandes who broke the deadlock for Portugal, despite Cristiano Ronaldo's claims, as the midfielder's crossed sailed into the net untouched.

Fernandes added a second with a controversial penalty in stoppage-time to seal Portugal's 2-0 win his nation's place in the last 16 of the World Cup.

Meanwhile, during the match, a pitch invader displayed several slogans on shirt, including 'Save Ukraine' and 'Respect for Iranian women', while wielding a rainbow flag.
