She is well-known for portraying Melanie Daniels in the 1963 Hitchcock thriller, ‘The Birds’ for which she won a Golden Globe Award.

Tippi Hedren was born Nathalie Kay Hedren in New Ulm, Minnesota, on January 19, 1930.

As of 2022, her age is 92. She was born to father Bernard Carl (1893-1979) and mother Dorothea Henrietta (née Eckhardt; 1899-1994).

Until 2004, her year of birth was reported as 1935. Her paternal grandparents were from Sweden whereas her mother was of German and Norwegian descent.

Following the success of The Birds, Hitchcock cast her as the lead for his next film, ‘Marnie’ (1964) as the titular character.

Tippi Hedren starred alongside Sean Connery in the movie. Success was huge for the two professionally but behind the scenes, things were getting sour between them.

His behavior eventually became so unbearable that she refused to work with him and Alfred vengefully and for a time successfully, harmed her career.

However, after she used her new star power to land major roles in two television series, Hitchcock gave up and in 1966, he sold her contract to Universal Studios.

A year later, Tippi Hedren starred alongside the legendary Marlon Brando and Sophia Loren in Charlie Chaplain’s last film as a director, A Countess from Hong Kong (1967).

Some of her major works after that include the political satire Citizen Ruth (1996) and the comedy I Heart Huckabees (2004).

Activism

Tippi Hedren is also an important animal rights activist.

Her commitment to animal rescue began in 1969 while she was shooting in Africa where she learned about the plight of African lions.

In an attempt to raise awareness, she spent over a decade bringing ‘Roar’ (1981) to the big screen.

In 1983, Tippi Hedren started her own nonprofit organization, the Roar Foundation which supports the Shambala Preserve, an 80-acre (32 ha) wildlife habitat.

Moreover, she has set up relief programs worldwide following hurricanes, earthquakes, famine, and war.
